Write right — grammar and punctuation
You don’t need to know grammar to write well as we know the rules intuitively. Grammar comes into its own when you want to work out why a sentence doesn’t work or are unsure what punctuation to use.
Where do you go for answers? Microsoft Grammar is hopeless, searching the internet takes too long and often colleagues give you conflicting advice.
This workshop is an opportunity to brush up on basic grammar skills and have your grammar questions answered. The workshop could include:
- Common grammar mistakes
Common business grammar mistakes include a lack of subject-verb agreement, a misuse of pronouns and poorly constructed sentences.
- Oft-confused words
Many people have mental blocks about words that look the same yet have very different meanings. For example, dependent/dependant and averse/adverse.
- Punctuation rules
Where does that pesky little apostrophe go? And what is the correct way to punctuate a list? This session looks at some punctuation rules and some punctuation do’s and don’ts.
- Q & As
An opportunity to ask any grammar question, no matter how trivial or stupid it seems.
Boost your team's writing skills (presentation for senior executives)
Too often, senior managers make changes to a writer's copy because they don't have time to discuss the work. The writer accepts these changes without reflection and maybe, or maybe not, adapts to their manager's styles. But what are they learning? Is their writing improving?
There is an art to teaching someone to write better. This session includes some tips on how to improve your coaching and editing style.
Write to govern – how to write effective senior management reports and board papers
Senior executives and directors appreciate reading material about non-financial data that it is concise, authoritative and easy to read.
This speech or presentation looks at how to write concise, yet comprehensive, non-financial board papers that are without spin, waffle or jargon.
